More Information

There have been 41 AONB’s designated in England and Wales since the mid 1950’s, with four being wholly in Wales and one, the Wye Valley, straddling the border between the two countries.

AONB Designation

The designation of the Clwydian Range as An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty was confirmed by the Secretary of State of Wales in July, 1985 under Part VI of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act, 1949.

The Purpose of the Designation

Their primary purpose is to conserve the most important landscapes of the nation for the benefit of this and future generations.  Thus they are nationally important areas.  The conservation and enhancement of natural beauty is the primary aim: natural beauty defined in this instance as also including the protection of flora, fauna and geological as well as landscape features.  However, as the landscape has been shaped by past human influence, the protection of archaeological and historic features, including historic landscape, architectural and vernacular features, is also important.
