Geodiversity

Geodiversity is the rich variety of rocks, minerals, fossils, landforms, soils and natural processes that form our planet.

Loggs CliffsGeodiversity is the link between rocks, landscape, people and culture.

Geodiversity and geological resources have a great impact on our lives by shaping the landscape which in turn influences the flora and fauna and determines land-use, including farming and where our homes, villages and towns are built. Many activities have an impact on geodiversity and landscape, for example industry, tourism and leisure including walking, climbing, mountain biking. Human beings have had a significant impact on the Clwydian Range; from Iron Age Hillforts through lead and spar mining to limestone quarrying and farming. These activities have affected the Clwydian Range in the past and continue to shape the landscape today.

It is well understood that conservation of the biodiversity is important but Geodiversity underpins Biodiversity. Geology influences the plants and animals that live in a particular habitat or environment as  the underlying geology determines soil type. If the landscape and geology are not conserved and managed then the biodiversity may be at risk.

Local Geodiversity Action Plan (LGAP)

The aim of this LGAP is to promote collective action to conserve and enhance the landscape of the Clwydian Range AONB through its outstanding geological heritage and to promote and manage the sustainable use of its geodiversity resources for the social and economic well-being of the inhabitants and those of neighbouring areas and visitors.
