Management Plan

Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty are regarded as amongst Britain’s most treasured landscapes and along with the National Parks their special character represent our finest and most precious tracts of countryside.

The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 for the first time established a framework for their management and protection and as such marked the beginning of a new era for these areas.  This new statutory framework gives greater strength to those responsible for the protection of these areas and establishes a robust structure that will provide direction for their management.

This plan sets out that path to better and more focused management for the Clwydian Range AONB.  It identifies those special features that make up the landscape, from the nationally important wildlife habitats to the historic monuments.  But in identifying these features it also recognises that the landscape owes as much to the communities within it and around it, living, working and enjoying leisure time in the area as to its hard physical features.

The plan identifies the pressures and issues affecting these Special Features and sets out a programme to respond to these pressures.  Specific actions have been identified that will help to target funding over the next five years and ensure that the special characteristics of the area are protected and enhanced.

The involvement of all those engaged in the management of the Clwydian Range has been an important milestone in setting an agenda for its future.  Only with this engagement of all those concerned, the local communities, farmers landowners, visitors and public bodies have we been able to agree a vision for the future of the AONB.  This process has helped to ensure that the Clwydian Range develops in line with fully supported objectives.

In this respect this plan sets an agenda not only for the Local Authorities charged with its production but for all those individuals, agencies, groups and bodies whose activities have an impact on the landscape and who are in a position to have an influence on its future.

Clwydian Range Management Plan 2009-14

The first statutory Management Plan for the Clwydian Range, published in 2004, for the first time, through consultation with local communities and land managers, clearly identified what makes the area special and set a clear agenda for investment in these special qualities and features. This plan builds on that work and looks to strengthen the partnerships needed to ensure lasting and effective change.

This plan also recognises the array of benefits and services the landscape provides for us, essential in our daily lives, and the delicate eco-systems that hold this complex network together. Understanding the contribution the landscape has to make to our economic, social and environmental well being is fundamental to investing in its future.
